How the band rate is decided

Add taxable gains to taxable income. The slice that fits inside the basic-rate band (up to £50,270 total) is taxed at 18%. The slice above is taxed at 24%.

When the rates changed

For disposals from 30 October 2024, non-property CGT moved from 10/20% to 18/24%, matching the residential rates31. The annual exempt amount dropped from £6,000 to £3,000 on 6 April 2024.
