Check my council tax band

Direct answer

To check the council tax band of any English or Welsh property, use the Valuation Office Agency register at gov.uk/council-tax-bands. It is free and postcode-driven223. For Scottish properties, use the Scottish Assessors Association portal28.

The four-step lookup

  1. Open the VOA register at gov.uk/council-tax-bands (or saa.gov.uk in Scotland).
  2. Enter your full postcode. The list shows every property in that postcode.
  3. Select your address. The page returns the band (A–H, or A–I in Wales) and any improvement indicator.
  4. Scroll to neighbouring properties of similar size and value. A mismatch is the first sign of a wrong band.

Cautions

A higher band on a neighbouring property is not automatic evidence your band is too low; assessors look at original 1991 (or 2003 in Wales) values, not modern sale prices. Use the comparison to inform a formal challenge, with caveats.
